Whatley to play on Shelton State Diamond

By Daniel L. Bamberg

He has arguably been one of the most rounded overall athletes in Bibb County High School athletics over the past few years.  Darren Whatley, former linebacker and quarterback and current pitcher and infielder with the Choctaws signed an athletic scholarship with Shelton State Community College on Monday, January 24.

“He is going to be just like all the other kids we have picked up from Bibb County,” explained Shelton State Head Baseball Coach Bobby Sprowl.  “There isn’t any doubt that baseball and Bibb County is as good as anywhere in the state.  Darren is a very unique talent in the fact that he’s a tremendous pitcher and can play at other positions.  If he stays focused and works hard he has a great future in this game.”

“It is a privilege to continue to play baseball,” expressed Darren.  “My senior season is still coming up and right now I will focus on that, but it is great knowing that I have something beyond that to look forward to.”

Darren also mentioned that he is going to be excited to play with some former teammates at Shelton State.  “It is always good to know people from your hometown when you go somewhere new.”

Coach Sprowl expressed that Darren has potential to see early playing time with the college ball club.

“He is going to be a frontline guy for us,” said coach.  “He is such a good athlete.  He would make a major impact with any team he signed with.  He is a tremendous competitor.”
