The Bibb County High School Girl’s Softball program has been producing some major talent over the past few years. Over the past handful of seasons the program has been feeding college programs with talent.
On Friday, January 21st Alyssa Kornegay and Grace Lawley signed athletic scholarships in the presence of their friends, family, current coach and future coaches. Kornegay signed with the Central Alabama Community College Trojans. CACC have won 8 Alabama Community College Conference Championships since 1997.
“She has come a long way since she first started,” explained Alyssa’s Aunt, Debbie Kornegay with a nostalgic smile. “The first time I saw her pitch a ball she threw it over the backstop fence, now she is moving on to the college level. She worked hard and has earned everything she has achieved. I am so proud of her”
Alyssa’s arm has been a dominant force on the mound for the Lady Choctaws. This season many expect her play to lead the team to another trip deep in the playoffs.
“Obviously she already knows how to pitch,” explains CACC coach Greg Shivers. “We couldn’t be more excited to get her. We are losing our top two pitchers this year, so she will have an opportunity to compete for one of those spots.”
“(CACC) has a great program and Alyssa is excited about being able to play with some of her travel ball teammates on the team,” said Alyssa’s mother Donna. This is a wonderful opportunity our whole family is proud of her.”
Grace Lawley signed with Marion Military Institute. She will be joining Bibb County’s Lauren Browning who signed with the Tigers in 2010.
“There is a strong talent pool in Bibb County athletics,” explained MMI coach Joe Guthrie. “Grace is going to be fulfilling a need inside our team. We’ve been looking at her for a while. We saw her with Bibb County and on her travel ball team. She’s going to be an exciting addition.”
Grace’s family has a deep history with MMI. In her family attending the school has been somewhat of a tradition.
“This is a great moment for Grace and for the family,” stated her father Terry Lawley. “She lives for softball. We have been waiting for this a long time.”
“We are absolutely thrilled that she gets to something she loves and that she is going to be with people and coaches that will make her feel comfortable.”
The Lawley family concluded with their prediction that the Lady Choctaws will go to state this year, joyfully suggesting that they expect it every year.
