Readers of the Centreville Press and Bibblogger (online) have spoken. In early January polls were placed on our blog for readers to select from some of the most newsworthy items and persons for our first ever “Centreville Press / Bibblogger” Newsworthiness Awards.
One of the two choice categories was “Bibb County’s Newsmaker of the Year.” In this category State Representative April Weaver, the late Reverend W.D. Dickerson, Bibb County High School’s and Alabama’s 4A defensive lineman of the year, Diaheem Watkins, and Woodstock cancer awareness volunteer Tina Brown received votes but not as many as the overall winner, newly elected Bibb County Schools Superintendent Greg Blake.
Blake got off to a fast start as leader in the polls almost immediately. From there he never looked back, eventually gaining just over 60% of the overall votes. Weaver gained just over 20% of the votes to finish second in the category.
Another category open for readers to vote on was “Bibb County’s Moment of the Year.” In this topic, Brent/Centreville/Woodstock/West Blocton Homecomings was a popular choice but wound up coming in 3rd in the voting. The first time appearance in the State Semi-Finals for the Bibb County High School Football team came in second place with 27% of the vote. It would be the historic vote for the legal sale of alcohol, which dominated conversation throughout 2010 that would win in a landslide victory as moment of the year. This candidacy proved too strong for the rest pulling in nearly 63% of the vote. Other choices in this category were the opening of the new Bibb County Board of Education Building, Diaheem Watkins receiving state recognition for his football play and April Weaver becoming the first woman in Bibb County history to be elected to a statewide office.
Blake has received his award and thanks the people of Bibb County for their continued support. We hope you have enjoyed this selection process and look forward to adding to it next year.
