"We are the front lines of truth advocacy. Major media outlets have traded truth for sensationalism, and online news sites have no real legal concerns to keep them in check. Digital text is not ink. The community newspapers are left as the only legally challenged body of information. We cannot afford to lie. We cannot afford to be inaccurate. We are the last stand for freedom of the press. We are the last of the true journalists."

According to Bibb County Sheriff’s Department, Mary K. Seals, 32 of Greenpond, drowned over the weekend in West Blocton.
At approximately 2:51 p.m. on Saturday, June 30 reports came in that a woman had entered into the river and never resurfaced.  The incident took place near Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge.
After the Bibb County Sheriff’s Department cleared the area divers from the department discovered the young woman’s body some 12 feet under near swift water.
Bibb County Sheriff Keith Hannah shared his condolences with the family the young woman.  He also commended the efforts of the dive team and other assisting rescue workers.
“The Cahaba River while beautiful, can be very dangerous,” said Sheriff Hannah.  “There are areas which appear as smooth as glass on the surface but have a strong current running underneath. Everyone should please practice the greatest amount of caution along the river.”
The area commonly known as “Piper” to the residents of Bibb County is known for being the center of attention during Cahaba Lilly season but over the years has become known for accidental drowning.
Saturday’s drowning was the 3rd incident in 6 years to occur in the same area.  There have also been a handful of notable rescues from drowning in the area over the years, including a man who was rescued by an out-of-towner during the 2009 Cahaba Lilly Festival.
