Marion girl killed in Saturday afternoon accident

By Daniel L. Bamberg

The afternoon of Saturday, March 5th brought about a tragic event on Highway 5 just a few miles south of Brent.

Jessica Hughey was killed in an accident while traveling with her father Jerry Arnet Hughey Jr., both of Marion.  Jessica was transported to DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa but unfortunately her young life could not be saved.  She was only 8 years old.

Authorities say that Patricia Hansen, also of Marion, was traveling southbound in a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe when she hit water on the roadway.  This according to investigators may have been what caused Hansen to lose control forcing her vehicle into a collision with Hughey’s Honda Civic, which was traveling, northbound.  Jessica’s 4-year-old brother, Jarred was also in the vehicle with his father.  Jarred was injured and taken to DCH.

Jessica's and Jarred's father, Jerry was seriously injured in the accident as well.  He is currently receiving treatment at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.

Patricia Hansen was not injured in the accident.  Patricia’s husband, Willis Hansen was however transported to DCH.  As of press time there was no official word on his condition.

Alabama State Troopers are still investigating the accident.
