U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and Congressman Spencer Bachus (AL-6) last week announced that the Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration has awarded $718,840 to local airports for necessary improvements.
Of that federal funding, the Bibb County Airport will receive an $87,470 grant for apron improvements and a runway extension study.
“A strong transportation infrastructure is critical to attracting new businesses and industries,” said Shelby. “These important grants will help the airports in the region make necessary improvements for their safe and trustworthy operation. Such improvements are essential to ensuring that these airports remain efficient transportation hubs for those traveling to, from, and through Alabama.”
“The Bibb County Airport is important to its local users and to economic development in the region. This modernization project will enhance service and improve safety at the airport,” Bachus said.
“This is a great thing for the county as well as the Airport Authority,” explained Mike Culliton of the Bibb County Airport Authority. “This will allow us to improve and repair the taxiway and provide for studies by the APA and ADEM on how our proposed runway extension will affect the local ecology. Ultimately, this is the first of many steps, which will hopefully conclude, with the Airport Authority’s goal of extending the runway over the next three years.”
Of the remaining $631,370 grants awarded to the region, the following airports will also receive funding:
• $129,965 to Folsom Field Airport, for land acquisition for approaches
• $120,337 to Rankin Fite Airport, for construction of a fuel farm and removal of obstructions
• $69,233 to Pryor Field Regional Airport, for construction of a fuel farm and to update airport master plan study
• $92,602 to Hartselle-Morgan County Regional Airport, for improving runway safety area and rehabilitating airport beacons
• $69,233 to North Pickens Airport, for rehabilitating the runway
• $150,000 to Posey Field Airport, for expanding access road and installing perimeter fencing
