"We are the front lines of truth advocacy. Major media outlets have traded truth for sensationalism, and online news sites have no real legal concerns to keep them in check. Digital text is not ink. The community newspapers are left as the only legally challenged body of information. We cannot afford to lie. We cannot afford to be inaccurate. We are the last stand for freedom of the press. We are the last of the true journalists."

Vance Elementary kindergarten kids celebrate milestone birthday of Bibb educator

By Daniel L. Bamberg

Former principal of the no longer existent Six Mile Elementary, Vera Sailors turned 100 years old on Saturday, February 26th.  To honor her milestone birthday and the 100th day of school she recently visited the classroom of her great great grandson, kindergartener, Brodee Hyche.

Brodee’s teacher Mrs. Watson turned over her classroom to the former educator and resident of the Antioch community.  Mrs. Sailors read aloud to the student, “The Foot Book,” a Dr. Seuss classic.  The kindergarteners made her birthday cards and Mrs. Watson served a birthday cake.  Mrs. Sailors capped off her day by eating lunch with the class and her great, great grandson, who is the son Krystle and Justin Hyche. Krystle is an employee of the Bibb County Board of Education.

Vera Sailors lived in the Eoline area most of her life and is known in the community as a valued veteran educator.  According to her grandchildren she is smart as a tack and is full of stories about the past.  Sailors represents the wise end of a family currently surviving five generations deep.

On Saturday she will celebrate her century mark with her family at her home.  Mrs. Sailors still visits Centreville weekly to get her hair done and is a well-respected and beloved member of Bibb County’s storied history.
