"We are the front lines of truth advocacy. Major media outlets have traded truth for sensationalism, and online news sites have no real legal concerns to keep them in check. Digital text is not ink. The community newspapers are left as the only legally challenged body of information. We cannot afford to lie. We cannot afford to be inaccurate. We are the last stand for freedom of the press. We are the last of the true journalists."

WBHS and CMS students help David take on Goliath

By Daniel L. Bamberg

West Blocton High School students along with Centreville Middle School students recently participated in a fundraiser for Kyli’s Krusaders, a Relay For Life team started by Jennifer Steele of Centreville.

Jennifer is the wife of West Blocton High School teacher and coach, David Steele.  The couple’s infant daughter, Kyli was diagnosed in 2010 with cancer.  Jennifer began Kyli’s Krusaders to help raise money for Cancer research and awareness in honor of their daughter.

WBHS Spanish teacher, Laura Collins and students began raising money for David’s run at the Mercedes Marathon.  David ran ¾ of a mile at the event on Saturday, February 12.  WBHS student, Jarad Terry designed a concept for a t-shirt, which honors Kyli with her name on a purple ribbon in the front and supports David’s run on the back with the appropriately bold statement, “David versus Goliath.”

Collins explained on the Friday before the run that Goliath was a metaphor for the run David was making as well as the overall issue of raising awareness to cancer research.  On this day before the run a large portion of WBHS students and the entire faculty were wearing their “David versus Goliath” t-shirts.

The fundraiser to support David’s run accumulated $14000.  WBHS Principal Doug Milligan explained that he was proud of the way the students have rallied around Kyli and the Steel family.

The Steele family echoed deep appreciation for what the students of West Blocton High School and Centreville Middle School did in honor of Kyli and in effort to raise awareness to the world’s most feared ailment.
