"We are the front lines of truth advocacy. Major media outlets have traded truth for sensationalism, and online news sites have no real legal concerns to keep them in check. Digital text is not ink. The community newspapers are left as the only legally challenged body of information. We cannot afford to lie. We cannot afford to be inaccurate. We are the last stand for freedom of the press. We are the last of the true journalists."

‘Relay For Life’ kicks off enthusiastic 2011 season

By Daniel L. Bamberg

The Bibb County Chapter of the American Cancer Society’s fundraising event, Relay For Life held its kick off lunch on Tuesday, January 25.

The meeting was held at Centreville Baptist Church among an enthusiastic group of citizens, inspired mostly in hopes for a cure to one of the world’s most dreaded diseases.

This year, it is estimated that more than 1.3 new patients will be diagnosed.  1,500 people are expected each day will die from cancer in 2011.  According to the American Cancer Society one of every three deaths is attributed to some form of cancer.

This year’s fund raising goal for the Bibb County Chapter is $65,000.  Community Representative for ACS, Jennifer Hallman believes that the money can be raised through the efforts of 25 local teams.

The lunch began with the presentation of a film created by students at Texas Tech University.  This brief video boldly demonstrates the perceived wastefulness most Americans will spend five dollars on, and concludes by showing that five dollars from enough people could change lives, bring hope, and one day may lead to a cure.

Local attorney Erica Boozer addressed those in attendance with new ideas to help educate the community.

Roberta Lawrence and Michael Goldforb were recognized “for their enormous efforts in fund raising as well as volunteerism during the 2010 campaign,” according to Hallman.  Cancer survivors on hand for the kick off were asked to stand in order to be recognized as well.

This year’s Relay For Life Luminaria Ceremony will be held on Friday, May 6 at Heritage Park in Brent.  Luminaries can be purchased by anyone who is affiliated with Relay For Life, and will bear the name of any loved one who survived or passed away from cancer.
