"We are the front lines of truth advocacy. Major media outlets have traded truth for sensationalism, and online news sites have no real legal concerns to keep them in check. Digital text is not ink. The community newspapers are left as the only legally challenged body of information. We cannot afford to lie. We cannot afford to be inaccurate. We are the last stand for freedom of the press. We are the last of the true journalists."

As the New Year becomes a reality, many will reflect on the year that was.  There was a lot of local buzz during 2010.  There were moments of change, triumph, strange occurrences, unique tales and tragedy.  The following are the most memorable twenty stories covered by The Centreville Press in 2009 (reverse order).

The stories were selected based on criteria such as importance to the community, comments by the community received about them (whether by email, phone, visit or on the street), and memories of the composition process from the reporter.

Bibb County High School football personalities, Diaheem Watkins and Mike Battles were given best of the year recognitions by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.  Watkins, who was one Bibb County’s most feared defenders over the last 3 seasons, won 4A Lineman of the Year.

“His technique, quickness and knowledge if what’s happening makes Diaheem a dominant player,” explained BCHS head coach Mike Battles. “He’s one of those that doesn’t come around often.”

Coach Battles won the 4A Coach of the Year.  “That is a culmination of having great ball players, a great community and administration and great assistant coaches,” explained the always humble, Battles.

Marvell Bell was named to the AWSA All-State 4A team for his season as an outstanding offensive lineman.  C.J. Cutts, Taylor Morton, and Andrell Smith were given second team AWSA All-State nods.
